Two ways: start from the "bottom" as a patrol officer and work up the ranks.

This way usually involves some savvy politics along the way: don't go stupid and sign up for speical assignments you can't handle as a means for quick career advancement; young bucks everyday do this and either get themselves or fellow officers hurt or even killed.

Brown-nosing is an added danger to an already dangerous law enforcement profession. Just think back to 9/11 and you'll get my point.

The other way, one I recommend, is you enter in college; work hard and honest, earning a degree in Criminal Justice. Earn an impressive CJ degree with the top class grades, and you'll go in the department as a ranking officer--perhaps on the detective level....and perhaps up from there.

Whatever you do....remember this: Be careful who you f # ck with on the way up; they'll be waiting for you on the way down.

Seems like a good goal to obtain. Remember though that you will see the absolute worst in society. Also remember that the profession(s) that you are looking into have a very high suicide rate. Don't go into it unless you are mentally Strong. Also another concern. I used to be homeless so perhaps this concerns me more than most. Always be just. I know that sounds weird; but many police tend to harass segments of the population just because they tend not to have the power to do anything about it. That is wrong. I doubt they went into the police force wishing to become that and some don't. However; I must admit many of the police are worse than the criminals they are sworn to apprehend. However; I have known a few good police officers and they are as good as gold. I can count them on one hand but that's another matter entirely. Just make sure you do not let the position make you. If you are the type that will-- then let it go.

Join a law enforcement agency...work your way up the ranks/spend 'time in grade', take the exams (written and verbal), gain rank based on performance and seniority, and go for it.
