Could be a hardware issue: need a new or better sound card. Could be a software issue: you lost the drivers and will need to restore them.
You know what to do if it's a hard ware issue. But let's first see if it's a software issue, first.
There should be a "speaker cone" icon on your taskbar, beside your clock. Double click that and a box should appear, noting all your sound controls. Make sure the slides are in the middle and there are NO mute or MUTE ALL boxes checked. Click OK or APPLY and restart the PC.
Still no sound? If you did a SYSTEM RESTORE, try going back to that point. If you don't understand what I just suggested, you didn't do one and you'll either have to resort to using any sound card CD to reinstall the sound drivers or go to this link for totally free help: www.suggestafix.com

I would first click on the little speaker down by the clock and make sure the mute is not checked and the volume is all the way up
