I have an older computer w/ and ethernet card (550 mghz) and an up to date laptop.

I'd like to set up a wireless network in my home. Can I install a wireless card in this older computer and have both computers essentially wireless to the internet? I'm concerned that a wireless card and/or router might have specific requirements which the older computer won't meet. Thanks.

Yes you can the only thing you need to really look for is the software and driver that will make the hardware compatible. Most of the time you can go to the manufactures website for them.
