empowerment of people is possible through mass media. However here needs to be a unity of aim for the empowerment to do any good. Just think about what we as an international community could achieve via the internet (a form of mass meda) if we had a single aim.

I think parts of empowerment can be helped by the media. An example being that you see a movie about an issue you didn't know much about and now want to fight for it or a TV show that deals with an issue you have had to where you see somebody you are like, so you don't feel so alone with that feeling or issue. Like the movie "V for Vendetta" where an important issue was raised about government and the power of the people, that movie meant something to a lot of people, it empowered them to feel and act... some in a different way then ever before.

It will only empower those who own it--a handful of megacorps--and no, they don't have a left-wing bias, although it is true they are to the left of Rush Limbaugh (for the present), but the same could be said of Adolf Hitler.
