I caught the ending part of the story this morning on the new but never heard anything more about it. I told my husband but he didn't seem to believe anything I had to say.

It didn't almost hit earth. They knew it was coming. It was about half the size of a football field. It would have done considerable damage to the entire earth had it hit, but there was no possibility of that happening. It's closest orbit was just just farther than the moon.

If the asteriod that passed by earth on monday did hit earth it was estimated that a 10 to 20 mile, in diameter, creator would have been the result. The total effect of such an impact would depend on where it hit. Check out a book called " Fire on Earth: How ateriod & comet collisions have shaped human history - and what dangers lie ahead"
That is if you are interested in this kind of stuff. I think it is kind of cool. The book is by John & Mary Gribbin.

That was a long time ago and is blamed for the extinction of dinosaurs and the majority of life on earth at the time. I don't recall if it was a meteorite of an asteroid but scientists say it could happen again. They have detected no space bodies on a collision course for earth at present.

Depending on the size, we could experience a mini Ice Age all the way to a nuclear winter where we all die.
