I eventually want to get some sea horses I think. How are they? What other fish do they get along with, not get along with? What kind of environment do they prefer? What about sea dragons? Where can you get sea horses and sea dragons from?

Because seahorses are poor swimmers, there are very few fish that they can be kept with as the other fish will out-compete them for food. Wild caught seahorses are hard to train to eat frozen fish and cannot be mixed with captive bred. If you want a seahorse only tank, it isn't too difficult but can take up to a year to get a tank properly started. Below is a website that will give you all the information that you are looking for

I had sea horses for a while. I got mine from an add in FAMA (frshwater and marine aqaurium magazine). They lived quite some time and my male actually carried babies till they grew. Fun at first but one day not paying attention can be disaster. There water must be kept pristine and they have to be hand fed or food introduced to their water colum which pollutes the water. Give them a shot I thought they were very interesting but got to be a real chore in the end. I had one of those brine shrimp hatcheries at the end that used an airstone it hatched the eggs and the brines shrimp would then move into the tank to get ate. It helped alot with feeding the babies. Had to move and lost them in transit otherwords I may still have them even though they were a pain in the butt they were beutifull.

Some species of seahorses look quite exotic, and they photograph well, but they are very difficult to keep. They are extremely sensitive to water quality and you have to be very careful about any other fish in the tank.

The one success I had with them involved adding them to an established reef tank with no other large fish. The tank had a large refugium which produced a steady supply of food for the seahorses in the main tank. I also provided some live brine shrimp and other supplements from time to time.

I would recommend an easier species of fish.

Well I'm not sure about all fish... however, I do know that Sea Horses and Tangs do not get along. Any fish store worth there "salt" can tell you what to avoid.

They are very senitive to the water conditions, pretty cool looking, but are anchored to the tank 95% of the time. So there not real exciting. Just a thought.

I do not believe that they are extremely difficult to raise but many of the species are diffucult of illegal to keep. They also have a short lifespan.
