Hi, I don't want to slam anyone, but I am familiar with many sleeping Medications, having been Med. Certified, and dispensing them to my Patients. Ambien=Amnesia Benedryl, long term, causes restless legs, and is hard on the Kidneys.
Breathing techniques are what work for me, or a Mantra. One breathing technique is imagine Bamboo. Breathe to the top of a Bamboo, then exhale,at each section, gently hold your breath, and then exhale to the next section, gently hold a couple of seconds, then exhale to the next one, and on, then start over.
It works pretty good. I think it is a Japanese thing
Try not to drink caffeine after 2:00 PM.
When the wheels start to spin, just remember to breathe.....In through the nose, relax your throat, and exhale slowly. I used to teach my Massage Patients how to breathe....Relax.....Nite now..

How to get to sleep:

Pills are hopefully the last resort.

You want to start by setting a routine you do before you go to bed at night. Reading a book, taking a bath, exercising, watching a short film, lighting some candles and putting on relaxing music, eating a quite meal, taking a walk, sex. Haha..anything relaxing.

Your body will get used to shutting down after you preform whatever relaxing activity you choose.

Be sure when you go to sleep to have minimal noise as possible, unless "nature sound effects" help relax you.

Try and clear your mind, or you can focus on one thing to think about, such as the events of your day. If you cannot fall asleep within 10-15 minutes, do not try any longer.

Get up and do something. Maybe go for another walk, or watch a TV show. Make sure it isn't too upbeat, and only occupy yourself for up to 30 minutes.

Then try to sleep again, and if you need to, repeat your "relaxing activity routine" that you do before you go to bed the first time.

This is the best advice I can give...and I hope it helps!

Goodnight. =D

There are many things that can cause one not to be able to sleep. The best thing you can do for yourself is to go to your PCP. The doctor will find out about your lifestyle; if you are depressed, which is often a cause of sleeplesness; what you eat and when, because certain foods will cause sleeplessness; anxiety from emotional problems; your daily stress you live with; bipolar illness will keep you from sleeping when in the manic phase and there's all levels of bipolar illness depending on a person's personality; when you tell the doctor your mind seems restless, he/she will want you to describe that to most effectively help you. My grandmas who have been gone for many years, always told me when I couldn't sleep to drink a small glass of milk, as the protein in it would quiet the mind. Some people can't exercise too late in the evening either because it will stimulate your endorphins and make you wake up. Also the temperature of your bedroom, the noise level, outside noises interrupting your peace, too much stimulation for several hours before bedtime, not going to sleep at about the same time and waking at the same time, sleep apnea which can be treated by a doctor can disturb sleep patterns, too many pressures from other people such as controlling people in your life or your job could have too many pressures for what you need to deal with. These are but a few things I can think of that I know can disturb sleep. A warm soaking bath can aid sleep if nothing is physically wrong. Best of luck to you, but I strongly advise you seek a professional's help.

first of all stop worrying it solves no problems
learn to relax and enjoy life

when I go to bed I relax I know I've done my best even if the rest the world does not know that

I find a sleeping position that is very comfortable

then I put myself to sleep by pretending to be sleeping already and soon I really do fall asleep.

if some nagging problem pops up I say (not out loud) something like - Stop - go away or I think about that tomorrow. I refuse to intertain the though - I reject it and get into that relaxed mode again and start all over with the steps memtioned above.

I alway pray and ask God to forgive me of my sin through his Son Jesus and ask Him to handle things for me while I sleep. You see I believe that God never sleeps so there is no use for both of us being up take care of my business (my problems).

for some reason many people those days do not want to acknowledge God - I think its simpler to acknowledge Him as God and accept the fact that Jesus died for my sin and accept His mercy and grace. I often ask God to forgive me for things I do and ask him to help me when I have a problem. Sometimes I ask Him for His advice on some problem I can not seem to solve many times I relax and look at the problem from different view points and the answer comes to me. I always thank God when that happens.

Your Mind will be less restless if you include God in your Life

Write down the things that you are thinking about and put the sheet of paper aside. I think part of the restlessness is the fear that you will forget, so your mind keeps going over your thoughts again and again so you will remember them. Writing your thoughts is like emptying your mind by recording what you are thinking about onto a sheet of paper. This method usually works for me.

To prevent the problem from happening in the first place, try to deal with the problems or issues that keep you up at night while you are awake. Also, try to establish a sleep/wake time routine to reset your body's natural rythym. Try to wake up, and go to bed at the same time each day, and get into a pattern of activities before bed time - perhaps 15 minutes of reading, or journaling.

Exercising during the day helps. Before that I used to listen to hypnosis CDs by Wendi Friesen (www.wendi.com but you can also download them from bittorrent sites like isohunt.com). I still do sometimes. Other things that help are:

-don't use your bed for anything but sleep and sex. If you watch TV or do homework in it, your brain starts to associate your bed with high levels of mental activity and/or excitement and will stay in an active state when you want it to relax.

-don't lie in bed awake for more than twenty minutes. If you can't fall asleep after twenty minutes, sit in a chair and read something boring until you feel sleepy and try to sleep again.

I'm afraid my advice is another pill. It is dilantin. Dilantin is used by traditional medicine for anti-convulsions, but in a small dose one 100mg twice a day it has helped me. It is a prescription medicine and must be prescribed by a doctor. I am not alone in getting help from this and the good news is that it is not addictive, and does not cloud your mind. The bad is that you may have trouble getting a doctor to prescribe it for your problem since it is not listed by the FDA for your problem. You can learn more about dilantin in a book written by Jack Dreyfus (the founder of the Dreyfus Fund) who was also helped by dilantin and has spent millions of dollars and over 40 years trying to get the FDA to list other benefits of dilantin unfortunately without success. The book is: The Story of a Remarkable Medicine.

I've been reading the other comments and I'd try their advice first, but I tired all those things (I'm a Christian also), but they did not work for me. I believe God lead me to dilantin and I believe that while He can heal us directly He most often uses means including doctors and medicines and good food, etc.

If possible, make your day more active so that by bedtime you are exhausted. Take a soothing bath and grab a relaxing beverage. After your body has finished winding down, you should drift off to sleep.

If your mind is restless because it is planning tomorrow's activities, make time in your evening to set up tomorrow's agenda. Place tomorrow's agenda beside your bed. If you forgot something, you can add it as it pops into your head. This will free your mind to rest peacefully.

Pleasant dreams to you.

Maybe you could try a meditation ritual. When you lie down, think about what you did that day from beginning to end. When you're done that, be content to listen to your breath. Whenever you find yourself not listening to your breath and thinking something, say to yourself something like, "That's nice, let it go", then resume listening to your breath.

Also make sure you're not having caffeine after 12 noon everyday. Caffeine affects the body for a long time.
