I read the books a few times before ever seeing the movies, and I loved both tremendously. On New Year's Day, 2005, I watched all 3 extended editions back-to-back-to-back - whoa! To tell you the truth, that was a great day! I couldn't have done that had the movies not been so well-done.
However, for some strange reason, I now find myself not really eager to re-read the books. That might be a small curse of the movies being so good: I can sit through them and get the visual without making an effort, and I don't have to be cheesed about the cuts because the main items were addressed pretty well. Besides, it would take me more than 12 hours to read the books because I always find myself looking back over details to make sure I have them in mind.

The trilogy is amazing. I've never had so many goosebumps watching movies. The battle at Helm's deep has to be a favorite. Everything is so well done and it really sucks you in as if you were a part of that world. The stories alone are great but I think that Peter Jackson and the crew deserved all the awards they won because they did a phenomenal job of bringing the books to life. And so much eye candy too!!!!! At the parade for the premiere in NZ I saw girls holding up signs that said 'I want a Pippin for Christmas' so cute. And Viggo, Orlando, Dominic Wow.

Having read the books when I was young, I think the movies left out some important parts. They were excellent, but just not exactly what some people remembered. I think the whole world that Tolkein created was so intricately described, that it almost seems like it really existed. He was a genius with an awesome imagination.

One weekend when I was in high school I got up at 6 am, settled down with Fellowship of the Ring and started reading. At 2am the next morning I finished the Return of the King. It was a great experience.
I will always have a soft spot for LotR

I just love the fact that Tolkien wrote the books so he could use the Elf language he made up. They are great books, I was sort of sad when I finished them. I'm a nerd I know

No. The films suffer from weak and over-emotional acting, melodramatic and simplistic dialogue, and too much Hollywood conventionality, which manifests itself in the cheesy "uplifting" musical score and romantic subplots which feel tacked-on and underdeveloped. However, I will praise the film for its cinematography, beautiful scenery and technical achievements.

Have you read the books, or just seen the movies? The movies are fantastic, but the books are just so much more.
