is it better to get a small one for less wear and tear of do they actually make a cover that can withstand constant looking at?

Moleskine. Love 'em. You can get them gridded, blank, lined, storybook style, sketchbook style, and more. See www.Moleskine.com. You can also find them on eBay most of the time. They're reasonably priced, too. Molskine, for sure. The only bound sketchbook I've ever had that didn't fall apart at the binding. Also, the rubber-band on the side is a deffinite plus. They come in several sizes- my favorite is the sort of medium sized one. Tiny pads are too hard to draw in, but big ones are too cumbersome to carry with you.
