Look for any books by David and Leigh Eddings. Outstanding minds at work. It is NOT sci-fi, but does lean towards fantasy - if you're unable to see the corrolations to human history. Either way, the story telling is astonishingly well done. Give them a try - what they've written could last you several months. Enjoy.

Do not die. It is very difficult to read that way.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver....actually this one plus her earlier ones like Animal Dreams.

Birds of America by Lorrie Moore if you like short stories. Alice Munro also for short stories.

Isaac's Dream by Eric Larson is a nonfiction thriller about a hurricane off the coast of Texas that is full of history and pathos.

The Last Report of the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich

The Moviegoer by Walker Percy

A Shadow in Summer by Daniel Abraham.....the best fantasy novel I have ever read

Good luck. I would enjoy hearing if you choose and enjoy any of these books. I have tried to suggest page turners that are marvelousl;y written and will help you pass the few month that you have for yourself.

Any of the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett, especially the witches books, or any 'starring' Death or his granddaughter Susan. They'll make you laugh out loud (tends to be a little embarrassing on the train or the beach, but what the hey!) but also make you think a little. As there are now more than thirty published Mr Pratchett could make your summer very enjoyable.

Anita Shreve's books are great. I especially liked The Pilot's Wife, The Weight of Water, and Resistance. She is so descriptive that you feel you're there looking on.
