This effect is caused by the atmosphere of the earth. The reason for the orange color is due to the scattering of light by the atmosphere. When the moon is near the horizon, the moonlight must pass through much more atmosphere than when the moon is directly overhead. By the time the moonlight reaches your eyes, the blue, green, and purple pieces of visible light have been scattered away by air molecules. That's why you only see yellow, orange, or red.
The moon can have an orange color at any time of the year. Sometimes the moon appears orange even when it's directly overhead. This occurs when there's a lot of dust, smoke, or pollution in the atmosphere. The size of those particles will determine the type of color you will see.

Sorry, I just wanted to *try* to be funny since I figured someone else would provide the correct answer before me. But, here's some info:

Two reasons. One is due to particles in the atmosphere that make the moon look orange when it rises.
And during an eclipse the shadow of the earth can also make the moon look as if it is a deep orange color.

I talked concerning the moon orange a pair years in the past. i became by using a wooded area fireplace three hundred miles away. would not propose that it became orange for each individual. in straight forward words to those who had smoke contained in the ambience, between them and the moon.

hmmm.. I'm not really sure... maybe... it is the sunshine passing through the earths atmosphere... blue light gets bent more than red... (kinda like a prism) and the red is able to escape and shine on the moon while the blue is trapped and comes to earth (same principle that makes the sky look blue in the daytime.)
