maybe the youth over there has a legitimate complaint? They used to be very smart in Arabia and led the world in technology and civilization. What happened? Where is Lawrence of Arabia when we need him?

"Intel Knight" is right: political scientists have long studied what is known as the "resource curse"--the commonplace phenomenon that countries that are rich in natural resources (such as oil or diamonds) often tend to non-democratic governments, high amounts of inequality, and lower rates of economic growth. Scholars are divided about why this is the case, but many believe it has something to do with the fact that natural resources--as opposed to human labor or financial capital--are easily controlled and extracted. This makes it more likely that they will benefit the few rather than the many.

Be careful when you talk about money. The people who have the money in Arabia are few and they try their best to keep what they have. Also feuding wars between religious groups have also helped to keep much of the middle east impoverished. And if you consider feuding sects of Islam "backwards" take a look at Ireland where Catholics and Protestants have been fighting for ages. In truth, Arabia isn't backwards, it's just catching up, these people have been living the same way for generations and the rest of the world has just now past them up. Be patient and some day America may look backwards to them.

Arabs are not interested in technology. The harsh punishments and general attitude there prevents open thinking. They are taught to think and act like military soldiers. How can they progress in science?? Lawrence of Arabia had a military cause so he succeeded but it is impossible now. Also, their king is wasting his money in Los Vegas and there is no check and balance on him! As long as people do not get the right to tell their king don't spend money ruthlessly, there is no hope for Arabia.

Lawrence of Arabia did his best to teach the Arabs to work together to better their lot. They could not break out of the feudal system because of secular fighting between groups. They have never been aware of the benefits of human rights and democracy that we take for granted in the West. Only when their system started to effect us because of all the oil money and hate have we seen the problem and hopefully this can be addressed.

The reason is that the people allowed severe fundamentalist Islamic persons to take over their country and their lives. They took away the power of the masses to educate themselves and to explore their own free will about a multitude of things that could have kept their country progressing. However, now that these persons of dubious distinction are in power, much of the Middle East is behind the rest of the world in technology, eucation, and other types of development.

oil is a curse, not a blessing
if you have easy money, there is no reason to develop production, technology, education. No need to fight poverty either, as you can afford a police force to protect yourself and the oil wells.
