Yes he is great player.
I am surprise that he comes at no. 7 in test and hit double century.

He must be close.
Here are a few of the best from the 80s.
There are a pair of Australians that come to mind for sheer elegance and excitement. Dean Jones and Simon O'Donnell.
Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge from the Windies.
Ian Botham with the bat could be devestating.
Lance Klusener from Sth Africa in the 80s and 90s had a thick bat and could hit the ball a long long way.
My vote -
When I was growing up in Australia, Viv Richards was the most exciting batsman by far. the guy just chewed gum and hit you over the fence over and over. Because Australia was a bit down at the time, some of my friends even "barracked" for the Windies.

certainly its Adam Gilchrist
its mainly coz of the consistency that he had over a long period of time in international cricket
there were exciting players before but hitting bowlers allover the ground during crunch situation is a rare species and Adam is one
the other options mentioned here has not been this consistency and exciting as well
