yet another foam crack has delayed it. Do not get me wrong, I am truly a huge supporter of NASA. I frequently take the hour drive south from my home to visit Kennedy Space Center. But, why does it not seem possible for some chemist to come up with a foam that can handle the temperature extremes of the fuel tank and handle its application process onto the tank in order to prevent cracking? I have spent the last couple days going out to the beach and leaving disappointed. I fully comprehend that the shuttle is the most complex machine ever built by man. And, NASA's other claim to history is still the most powerful machine ever built: the Saturn V rocket. So, it strikes me as ironic that something SEEMINGLY (I am not a chemist) as simple as foam can be an "Achilles Heel".

Anyway for the latest info vist the following source

Latest scuttle butt from the shuttle hut said that the launch is on even with the 5" long and 1/8" deep crack in the foam (probably a result of the repeated filling and draining of the supercooled gases).

That was the plan, but on the evening news they said there was a crack found in the foam. They are afraid that it will either break off and cause damage, or, because the foam helps prevent ice build up, they are afraid ice could build up through the crack. They are saying it will probably be delayed.
