The Shareaza website says "Shareaza itself is 100% legal and if you use it for purposes that abide the law, you will never have any problem. However, many people use peer to peer software to download or distribute files for which they have no rights to either download or distribute; this is a violation of copyright laws or of other laws. Shareaza does not encourage any copyright infringement and does not directly offer any kind of protection against getting caught by authorities. It uses no hiding mechanism and no encryption, just nothing! If you choose to break the law, you are entirely on your own." Well How do you know if it is p2p? I am a novice.

No, it is NOT illegal to share files.

What IS illegal is to share files that you do not have the copyright to.

If YOU make a song, record it and share it, that is PERFECTLY LEGAL.

If you share a song that you do NOT have the copyright to, then THAT is illegal.

P2P software has many legal uses, but some people use it for illegal purposes.

Think of Shareza as a hammer. You can use it legally to build a house, or illegally to hit someone in the head. The hammer itself is legal, but the use to which it is put can be legal or illegal.

Shareaza is a P2P which works in combination with emule. If you're downloading any softwares, movies, music or anything at all that has copy rights, no matter in what country, It is covered by the copyright law. Simple as that. So it doesnt really matters what P2P you're using, it always go against the copyright law if you're using copyirghted material. So yes! it is NOT LEGAL!!

Any time someone has to claim that something is "100% legal" they are lying. Granted, if you can retain a lawyer who charges $150 an hour, you might be able to finagle your way out of it through the exact letter of the law. The regular guys like you and me who have to work for a living do not have that luxury so we are the ones who end up getting into trouble over things that are "100% legal". If it is something that is for sale in the store, trust me when I tell you that it is illegal to use file swapping software to obtain it for free.

Secondly, even though it is a tool used exclusively for copyright infringement, their $150 an hour lawyers tell them to say "dont break the law". When the authorities come to take them away, they can get off on a technicality.

Most all these websites work by trading files with other users and if the material is copyright material then it's illegal. Where people get into most trouble is when it comes to sharing and passing it around rather than just the downloading of it although both are considered illegal by the Music and Movie industry. What happens is your downloading program, most likely Limewire, will provide you with a list of material you can download but it also looks into your computer's memory for a sharing directory and in that directory broadcast the list of songs you have to share. The recording industry is going after people who have mega libraries of copyright material that they are sharing. Regardless if you are downloading it or allowing others to copy it from your computer if it is copyright material, and most is, then it technically is Illegal.

It's P2P. Basically, what it's saying is that you are liable for the files you upload or download. If that's a copyrighted MP3, it's illegal. If it's a file of your own creation (your own song, video, etc), it's legal.

Very simply, downloading ANYTHING that you have not paid for is illegal. If you do not buy the music from the record company than it is considered stealing.
