If it's black, then you can try an acid to remove the oxidation (like vinegar or an aluminum cleaner.) If it's turned weird colors, like iridescent swirls or white spots or something, you might be stuck with the weirdness. Spots are usually pitting and they don't really go away after they happen. Good luck (and I wouldn't try the aluminum foil and pan method, by the way. That's for tarnished silver.)

Take a piece of aluminum foil, place it in the bottom of a sink, empty a box of baking soda on top of the foil, fill sink to level as needed and place object on top of foil, let soak.

I am no expert on this, but I suggest making a paste of baking soda and scrubbing with that.
