That's the optimum amount of time for them to undergo the necessary metabolic processes to grow from infancy to maturity, and reproduce.

It's mainly due to genes. Most domesticated rats have short life spans because they are highly inbred and specialized. Add to that poor died, bad breeding, illness and rats don't have a promising future. Some people have had success cross breeding the wild Norway to the domesticated fancy rat. The resulting pups were healthier with fewer illnesses and one breeder said most of her offspring lived to be quite old - about 4-6 years. It's been several years since I last read that article, but it was quite promising. All it took was one breeding with a healthy wild Norway to improve the longevity and health of her entire line.

Because now they come out of the breeding farms as manufactured, unnatural little runts, suffering from anemia and malnutrition, and then they're marketed off by the bulk in cages to little kids who've never seen anything more exciting as an albino rat with moving tails.
Because now they're eating garbage with an enhancement--CHEMICAL WASTES and some time within those three years, that rat comes across a piece of chemical-infused sewage **** and it eats it and dies.
Because now they're being churned out of rat-mating factories, that some time in the next 3 years that they're released, they are only to be dropped into the jaws of a python who's never lived anywhere but Mr. Lee's glass tank.

Same question with, why many people die below 80? The answer is, what had been determined by God, there is no need to be discussed further. Imagine if rats die about 80, do we have enough space to live in?
