If the word "soul " carries any meaning to you (or other readers/viewers/users , then just as you know the words, class mates, school-mate, office-mate, "....."(any tangible)-mate, likewise, when two people or atleast one of them does experience the "being" of another person distinctly (independent of all his earthly attributes), then the person with this experience can refer and use the term "soul-mate' to really mean it while using it.
The rest simply use it for platonic relationship or ornamental use of the word.... Really a very subtle thing to be understood so casually !

There are different meanings than the more popular one. Please read the following:

Reincarnation: Some believe that a soul mate is someone with whom a person has shared other life times through reincarnation.
The soul mate could be a friend, business partner, parent, child, sibling, spouse or other family member. These soul mates can be of the same or opposite sex.

I think that it means to find the one person that you get along best with. A soul mate is the person that you are supposed to spend you life with.

A "soul mate" is someone who loves you for who you are and understands what you believe and how you come to your decisions. They don't always agree with you on everything, but they do respect your opinion and they do love you for who you are. Can't ask for much more than that.

someone who lights up your life, you smile everytime you see or think of that person, you can stand to be without them, anytime or anywhere, it's almost like not breathing, just a lite touch from that person just sends chills through you, you love them no matter what, even when they have morning breath

For me it meant that someone who can share your dreams, happiness and sorrows together. Giving each other support. Unconditional givings.
