Canseco Calls MLB 'Mafia' Before Return
Ex-MVP Accuses Game of Targeting Certain Players
By JANIE McCAULEY
AP Sports
CHICO, Calif. (July 3) - Jose Canseco wrote the book that helped persuade baseball to toughen its steroids policy, and he insists there's much more damaging information to come.

"I think what we're seeing is just the tip of the iceberg," Canseco said Monday, about five hours before he took the field for the first time with the San Diego Surf Dawgs in the independent Golden Baseball League. "I know for a fact that's what we're seeing."

Canseco received a smattering of boos and cheers before the game when he was announced as the designated hitter against the Chico Outlaws, then again when he stepped into the batter's box leading off the second inning.

Canseco, who had said it had been at least four years since he last swung a wooden bat, struck out swinging on four pitches. He struck out swinging again in the third - this time on five pitches - getting razzed in the process.

"Juiced!" one fan hollered, a reference to his book. "That's not a big league pitcher, Jose," another man yelled.

Earlier, Canseco called Major League Baseball "the mafia" for the way it has handled the game's steroids scandal and suggested that the sport will discipline only certain players and might even hide the truth when it comes to big-name stars and positive tests.

He plans to fight baseball to bring out the truth.

For one that admits to actively taking steroids combined with his plummeting skill level at the end of his career, I can't imagine that his minor league career will last longer than his kitsch value with Surf Dawg fans.

Hurray For Conseco!
It is very difficult decision to do the right thing. How many of us would have the courage to expose the truth about the game we loved?
.Let the man play the game that he loves without being harassed. No one should ever be harassed on the job.

It takes courage to take a stand especially when you take that stand against former team mates.
It's hard for people to think of athletes as mire people. For some reason, athletes have been treated like "Gods" But they should be held accountable for their actions just as everyone else ..Athletes should be held more accountable for their actions because they are role models for our youth..

Athletics is about training, practice, team work and talent.Steroids or any other performance altering drug has no place in the game. Thanks for bringing this issue to light.

Welcome Back Jose !

jesus christ dude, that is officially the longest question i've ever seen on here. anyway, i don't care about him playing ball again, but i think it's cool as hell how everyone ridiculed him when his book hit the market, and now he has 100 times as much credibility as anyone in baseball because practically everything he said is coming true. by the way, i am a canseco fan, roids or not.

For a true fan of the game it is sad....

You should never turn on your teammates...that whole "locker room thing".

Is he desperate to play again or is it about a paycheck with him?

Juiced or not, you go from a 40-40 guy to striking out for the Chico Outlaws.

You never want to see an athlete go out this way....because you do remember them when you sat in the stands or cheered for him at home.

*And let's admit it we had a lot of people doing the whole "Bash Brother" thing in Oakland.

He is an athlete who has brought a lot to baseball since first being drafted in 1982. His hitting and RBI stats prove him an outstanding and exciting sportsman. I personally look forward to seeing him play again.

I appreciate his honesty and his desire to bring integrity back to the game. Lets play a nice clean game boys and let the best team win- without the aid of outside stimulants such as steroids!!!

it really is clone of on line gaming vs the genuine existence. Like Wizard101, you'll nicely be speedy friends, merely through clicking the 'upload pal' button. even if it takes more beneficial than a communicate or 2 to develop into appropriate to have a friendship-courting.

More power to him. It's a free country, and if he wants to play baseball in a stadium where he has more teeth in his mouth than all the fans in the ballpark put together, good for him.
