There are a few ways to say "thank you" in Japanese, depending on your desired level of politeness. These are the most commonly used:

Thanks: doumo どうも
Thank you: doumo arigatou どうもありがとう
Thank you very much: arigatou gozaimasu ありがとうございます
arigatou gozaimashita ありがとうございました (past tense)

And a lot of times, the Japanese would simply attempt to say "thank you" in English.

Sankyuu サンキュー

Domo to your peer or friend.

Domo arigato to a stranger. Dozo, or dozo yoroshiku in awkward situations.

Domo arigato gozaimasu to a superior or elder person. Don't say dozo, however, except in a first time greeting.

It means "Please be kind to me."

If you are an American just say "Thank - you" Loudly, they'll understand.
Same rule applies for anything else you want to say to them.
