The alternator is on one belt and the power steering and AC is on the other. The alternator belt squeeled when ever I put the AC on and eventually broke. I replaced both belts and now the alternator belt sometimes slips and slips more (burning rubber smell) when I turn the AC on. What is going on?

Since your alternator is on it's own belt, then i would suggest checking the belt tension. If it has about 1/2 inches of play in it, then it's just about perfect. The other reason could be the alternators is seizing up when your system is calling on it for enough power to run the A/C. If that is the case, then you will probably need to replace the alternator. REMEBER to replace the pigtail on the side of the alternator at the same time you replace the alternator. This is VERY important, as Fords are prone to engine fires because of failure to do so.

Sounds like your a/c compressor is shot as well as the alternator having a bad bearing. Just a guess going on your description. Don't do anything here until your sure. I would say definitely that you have a compressor that is locked up. Not so sure about the alternator belt, but fairly confident. Double check your idler pulley and alternator. Good luck.

Either your belt is not tight enough or the bearings in your compressor are locking up and causing the belt to burn. Pop your hood with your engine running to see if any of the pulleys are locking up if not your belt is just loose. If the pulleys are locking up I would suggest purchasing a new compressor.
