You actually ovulate 12-16 days BEFORE your period (average being 14 days before). Therefore you can't count 10-14 days after the first day of your period unless you have the idealized 28 day cycle. The best way to tell when you are ovulating is by using a BASAL BODY THERMOMETER. You start 3 days after the start of your period and simply start taking your temp in the morning before getting out of bed. Then record your temp. About 24-48 hours before you ovulate you should see a temp spike. This is the time to start trying if you want to conceive. Alternately if you know your cycle you could use an ovulation calender and OPK (ovulation predictor kit) to determine the same info. Hope this helps.

The calendar is way #1. If you mark down the day you started your last period then you can count 12-15 days, and that is likely when you ovulate.

Your morning temperature is one way also, but I don't know the details of that one.

The way you feel. Sometimes you can get a minor PMSish feeling when ovulating.

A mild brief pulling in the lower abdomen on one side or the other may mean the ovary has ejected an egg.

If you are trying to check to get pregnant, check Yahoo!Answers as the question is sometimes asked, and gets decent answers.
