Commitment, don't hold back. That makes all the difference.
0. Trying and be moving as fast or faster than the person you are tackling
1. Square Shoulders before contact
2. Keep Face up Look where you are tackling, do not lower your head.
3. Try to place shoulder into stomach of opponent
4. If it's a running back he will get low, you must get lower
5. Explode with legs, Contact Shoulders to his lower stomach, Wrap arms hard and fast
6. Keep legs pumping after hit and drive thru him
7. You Must have the Attitude that no one on that field is better than you, Carry that attitude into every tackle and you will be successful
The best tackles that I remember the crowd going OHHH on were not straight up tackle but were slightly off center that drove the guy sideways as well as back.
You will have a big hit about 1 in 5 tackles and a great tack 1 in 12. Good Luck!

Alot of great answers here...
This is how I coach the big pop...
and you just missed the class room section on my dot com site
american-football-frankfurt
first - Forget about squaring to the ball carrier...this opportunity will come maybe once in a thousand...with my 5 years at college linebacker...I don't think I squared to a ball carrier...ever.
Squaring off means you are waiting for him to come to you...
that means he gains yards...
Thats bad for a defensive man...zero tolerance on my team.
Three part process...
A) contact
Low
Feet moving
Shoulders over your knees
Head up in front of the ball carrier
- you should feel like you're quickly squatting on the run to smell the ball carriers hip pads - funny image but it works
B) wrap
Throw your fists to either side of the ball carrier
Hug tightly with clubbed fists
Crush your shoulder into the opponent.
Driving with your feet
- at this point you should feel like you're lifting a GIANT wrapped Christmas tree onto your shoulder...
C) take down
Still driving with your feet forward
Fists clubbed and wrapping tighter
tackle the ball carrier to the ground
- the goal is to wrap so tight his feet come off the ground while you're still driving forward.
If you have a blocking sled...
this is a great place to practice this technique
- 20 times a night after practice.
The pop comes with the impact of forward momentum...
you won't hear it...the stadium will.
I'm the defensive coordinator on our team.
Thats how we train.
I currently have the best defense in the league.
Happy Hunting!

Man its not about the big hit. I mean, yeah it is demoralizing to the other team but if you can get them down on the ground then that is good enough.
But...if you truly want to hit them hard then what you need to do is use your legs. Right before you hit the defender spring from the ground hard and hit them. Oh, and hit them low. Anywhere from the abdomen to their knees. Just try not to break their legs....that's just going a little too far.

The big hits come from keeping your shoulders square and driving through the tackle with your legs and hips.

Always hit as low as possible for a Takedown...Takes your opponent out of the play effectively
A great technique...for the Big Pop!... You're in a " set position " & opponent is coming towards you at high speed...Perfect Position for a Huge Hit! ( His Speed is going to determine the amount of Pop!...the faster, the better! )
Stay crouched...Drive forward at last second with full leg-power, turning your preferred shoulder...into opponent's mid-section & driving upwards...( You're exploding from a solid base & he's game if you can catch him front-on...nailing him backwards with a bone-jarring hit! )
Learned these techniques in both Football & Hockey!

Timing mainly. If you can hit a wide receiver just as he catches the ball with your shoulder either at his shoulder or cut off his knees he can go flying.
Watch tapes of John Lynch or better yet Ronnie Lott to get an idea. It's not an easy thing to do as it's mainly physics...and who has time to calculate that on the field.

i play football, not likely the same position as you as im heavy...but if you get low, run hard, and get your head to the side, most likely itll be a good hit...a big pop may look good but it does the same thing as a regular tackle
