In August 2003 Mars was the closest to Earth 55.758 million km in 73,000 years. And on August 28 of the year 2287 Mars will only be 55.68 million km from Earth.

It's in conjuction, furtherst point from Earth.
Closest point was about two years ago, although about 12 months ago it was very close.
