The highly wrinkled and loose skin of the naked mole-rat helps avoid abrasion as the animal moves and burrows through the hard soil.
The skin of naked mole-rats lacks a key neurotransmitter called Substance P that is responsible in mammals for sending pain signals to the central nervous system. Therefore, when naked mole-rats are cut, scraped or burned, they feel no pain. When injected with Substance P, however, the pain signal works as it does in other mammals.
Naked mole-rats require very little oxygen. Because their burrows are almost completely sealed off from the surface they have adapted to an environment that is very high in carbon dioxide.
A naked mole-rat’s teeth will grow 10 inches in one year! Therefore they need to constantly gnaw on things to keep their teeth maintained.
A queen naked mole-rat can give birth to as many as 23 pups at one time, although the average litter size is 8-10. Over her lifetime, a queen may produce more than 500 babies.
A naked mole-rat colony may have more than 2 miles of roadways in their burrow system – all dug with just their teeth!
Unlike other rodents their size, naked mole-rats can live 15-20 years.
Naked mole-rats are very clean animals. They have special “toilet chambers” that are used by all the members of the colony and even have “dumps” where they will carry off unused or spoiled food.
The pups join the workforce very early, usually by the age of 2 months. Generally, their first job is as a “housekeeper,” helping to carry food and gather nesting material.

Naked mole-rats get their name for having little or no hair on their body. They are very unusual burrowing rodents native to parts of East Africa. They are three to four inches long and weigh between 25 and 40 grams. A naked mole-rat’s teeth are outside of its mouth and can grow ten inches in one year.

Naked mole-rat colonies are made up of a queen and her court. They are the only mammal with a eusocial colony, much like honeybees and ants. A eusocial animal is one that lives in a large family group in which only a few members produce all the offspring. The queen is in charge of assigning jobs and ensuring they are done correctly.

Their special exhibit will have a museum feel featuring these secretive and nocturnal creatures. Kids will be able to burrow like naked mole-rats through tunnels in the Pilot Traveling Exhibit Center; play dress-a mole-rat; and even dress up themselves as royal court members for a photo opportunity. There will also be scheduled feedings and zoo chats so visitors can get an up-close and personal experience.
