yes, you can legally punt on any down but i've been a diehard football fan since 1972 and i've never seen it done. i've seen people punt on third down several times, but never first or second

Punting on first down, yeah you can do it, and it seems like something the Vikings would have wanted to do last year. I recall one game where they won the game with defense and special teams. Perhaps if they had punted every time they got the ball, they could have scored more points...but other than that, if you don't have an uber defense and an offense that can't do anything but turn the ball over, you don't want to punt on first down.

Ok you can and you should let me tell you why. 30 seconds left in the game, your at your one yard line and you have only a nine point lead. You punt therefore you will not get a safety and and have to punt the ball from the 20 yard line and take the chance of the other team scoring a touchdown and the score is tied because you were not able to get out of the endzone or the quarterback was sacked.

Yeh u can punt on any down but punting on 1st through 3rd is not to smart.

Yes, the team can punt the ball on any down, but it would not be advised, unless, of course you're totally screwed.
