It's not that hard - you just need to practice the flute more than clarinet if you are going to switch. As you practice, use a mirror, which will help you get the mouthpiece straight across your chin. As well, getting a good teacher will be incredibly helpful to you - no matter what your instrument is. Band is great, I was in it for many years, but you will never learn to play an instrument well if all you do is stay in band. Get a good teacher and actually learn your instrument, whatever it might be!

It is not that hard. I think the clarinet is harder. Think about it, when you started playing the clarinet, you could only make the thing honk, right? Well, most people can get a sound out of the flute. It's just a matter of learning the fingering. I started on clarinet, I learned flute, tenor sax, bass clarinet, and oboe. The reed instruments are definitely harder in my opinion.

I play both flute and clarinet (and also alto sax). Flute is my primary instrument. I can tell you from a flute player's perspective, it was very easy for me to pick-up clarinet very quickly. It is easier for me to play clarinet than alto sax. I think the fingerings are similar in most respects. The embouchure is the bigger issue. It will be an adjustment to switch from a clarinet mouthpiece to a flute mouthpiece.

Well, the saxophone is alot easier to learn if you're trying to switch from clarinet to saxophone. But!- my friend switched from flute to clarinet. And on the day she actually played better on clarinet than on flute. So, if you're really good on clarinet, you may be flippin' rock out on the flute. Why would you want to switch from clarinet anyway? I mean- flute's okay i guess, but clarinet sounds alot better....

Don't know cause I just play clarinet. =)
But I'm thinkin' that it won't be hard. . .you just have to learn the hand movements for flute instead of clarinet. (From Vertical to Horizontal. . .lol)
