There are 3 types of xbox drive. The oldest that has 1 hole is the Thomson/RCA. It cannot read recorded CD's. Then there's the newest, the Samsung, which (I believe) has no holes, and can read recorded CD's. The one in between is the Philips. I believe it can read recorded CD's as well, though it accepts differwent brands sometimes. It probably has 2 holes.

If you're talking about holes in the tray, the Thomson has none, just that U-shaped reader gap. The Philips has one for a reason I don't know, and the Samsung has 2 cut-outs outside where the disk holding part of the tray is to save plastic.

TIP: To get recorded CDs to work (and void your warranty), open up your xbox (literally), put a CD drive in (At least set it on top of the Xbox dvd drive) and use the ribbonlike cable hooked up to the xbox dvd drive to hitch up your CD drive, and to power it, get a hard drive power splitter. Hook one end up to the power plug attatched to the hard drive, then plug the other 2 into the hard drive and your non-xbox CD drive. To get it to work, reboot after you insert a disk into the CD drive

the one with the holes might be an updated version so that it prevents you from using stuff like that.
