The present is a key to the passed. James Lyell It's a geology thing. It means that because no one was around a million years ago it's hard to say how rocks and continents and other stuff came to be, but if you examine the forces at work that are responsible for creating, say for instance limestone, you can make an educated guess that those were the same forces that were around a million years ago.
