This what it meant to be a prep when I was in high school: Someone who, whether they deserved it or not was being "prepared" (as in preparatory—a term for an exclusive high school) for college, particularly someone who doesn't make the grade, but manages to know the right people or say just the right things.

Aside from coming from middle to upper-middle class families, "Preps" are despised for starting the classic "us/them" distinction. They are the first to distinguish who is "us" and who is "them". Yet, they are just as stoned (if not more so) than the "stoners", as promiscuous as the "band-geeks", and are just as messed-up as the "Emo" kids. At least the "Emo" ones sort-of come to grips with it.

For example: I am a musician, but because I played an instrument (in this case, a band instrument), I was immediately labled a "bando". This unfair classification was set by the "elite" group of Preps at my school, and challenged by my ecclectic group of friends (I ignored cliques).

Next, I would like to point out the syntax of your question: While you could have written, "Why do people hate preps?", you did not. Instead, you choose to add a superfulous "so bad" to the end of your already established question (if you were to add a modifier, it would be "so badly", for future reference). Preps usually try to be something they aren't. Lately, the most well-off, suburban, Caucasian students can be seen dressing and acting more urban than those who fit the visual profile (color). They live in suburbia, their parents usually are at least BA/BS holders, and yet they fail to adaquately reflect the privilaged lifestyle they come from. They have so much just given to them, by their parents, by their teachers, by their coaches, by their friends, and yet they insist upon acting like they have it so tough. If they do have it tough, it's because they're too lazy to rise to their potential, or privilage.

George W. is a classic Prep. Look at how he, despite coming from a wealthy background, was passed through an Ivy League school, groomed from politics, and became the biggest joke in the history of our nation. Preps are hated because no matter what they have or can get, they'll always squander it.

mainly because they think they are above everybody else because their parents have a nicer house and more money.I guess they have a sense of entitlement.I used to hate preps but now i just feel bad for them one bad day in the stock market and bye bye money bye bye status.for me im an auto mechanic i make good money but preps will still look down at me but i dont care cause i can do stuff they cannot comprehend and they never will.
