Although women were considered to bring bad luck at sea, mariners always use the pronoun "she" when referring to their ships. Whether its proper name is masculine, or whether it is a man o'war, a battleship, or a nuclear submarine, a ship is always referred to as "she."
This old tradition is thought to stem from the fact that in the Romance languages, the word for "ship" is always in the feminine. For this reason, Mediterranean sailors always referred to their ship as "she", and the practice was adopted over the centuries by their English-speaking counterparts.
One source suggests that a ship "was nearer and dearer to the sailor than anyone except his mother." What better reason to call his ship "she"?
Chester Nimitz once said “A ship is always referred to as 'she' because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder”.

it goes back to the 1600s when men going to a far place for
war. would Cristin the boat with the name of the loved one they
had left behind and matured to what you asked.
actually now people reserve the rite to call a boat/ship what they
want depending on how it performs.
otherwise it can be allot worse than she.

Well, I could stick with the whole "vessel" idea, which in itself seems pretty obscure, but more down to earth would be the open nature of the high seas, and many maiden and Lorelei stories. Kind of an entire atmosphere of femininity.

Because at one point no ladies ever rode on a boat it was for men only. So to feel closer to loved ones at home they always called the ships 'she'. and to make endless voyages bearable

Men usually do this more than women. When a guy is talking about somthing beautiful to them, they often personify it by calling it a "she"

ar? really? i always call it?
For me, in my opinion i think that it's a gentle and vulnerable thing. Like Mother Earth.. it's very vulnerable to polution.
So, boats are vulnerable to storm :)
