2 most likely things: 1) brake switch adjustment 2) the cruise control cable adjustment. the brake switch can be checked by getting a helper to watch the brake lights while you push the brake peddle down. it should take about a half inch of travel to turn the brake lights on. if itis less it should be adjusted. also most often noticed the cruise shuts off when hitting alarger bump in the road . 2) cruise cable--most cruise control cables are adjustable in some manner. usually where they connect to the throttle body. cruise cable should have a small amount of slack with engine at idle. find a repair manual for proper adjustment or take it to your mechanic.

since it's fairly new-2000", it's likely your brake sensor switch. most cruise controls disengage when the brake light sensor switch is closed and the lights turn on,although being newer and thus overly complex for no apparent reason; yours may have a separate switch for the cruise control. In older gm vehicles however it is usually caused by the small telephone like wires in the blinker switch ,these eventually become brittle and break with the continuous wear they are subject to in a moving part-blinker switch. replacements are readily available in the after market. hope this helps.

Our former car used to do that when it was going uphill and really straining. It would disengage and we'd have to take over. I think it just became too much for the cruise control to handle.

Pattern failure = cruise switch, have a dealer check it with their cruise tester
