I'll be entering NU grad school of communication for an MA in speech-language pathology in the fall. One of my friends told me I should become a TA to cover tuition and earn a stipend. How do I go about applying to become a TA? How hard is it to get a position? Is it worth it in the end?

Unfortunately, you do not have that option now. When you applied to graduate programs, you were considered for Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships. If you had received one, you would have been notified already.

When you arrive at campus, you can let the Director of Graduate Studies know that if any additional assistantships open up, you'd be interested. But don't count on it. Assistantships are limited, and are therefore only offered to top candidates in order to encourage them to select that program.

However, if someone with an assistantship drops out, or turns out to be a problem, then their assistantship will need to be filled, so if you distinguish yourself as THE outstanding student in your program, then you would be considered for that position.

Also, you can make clear to the DGS that you'd like to be considered for an assistantship next year. If their program allows, and again, if you distinguish yourself in your studies, then they could consider you for the following academic year.

Focus on your school work! Get loans and pay them off later. No time for work.
