my neighbor found it today but before we could get something to kill it with it was gone, we think that it went under the house.

A Redbelly snake, common but rarely seen in North America, it matures to about the size of a pencil, is non-venomous, doesn't have fangs, and eats primarily slugs.

It's probably a garter snake. Harmless and beneficial to you. Why do you want to kill it? It eats bugs and small rodents that I think you wouldn't want around. I don't understand why people have such a fear of snakes and other reptiles. Take the time to learn about them. Here's a link for a herpetological society where you can find pictures of your snake and learn about them...that is, if you want to take the time. The time you spend trying to kill it could be better used to learn about them.

where do you live ..if its in australia it sounds like a red belly black snake...but i would suggest going online and looking up the district you live in and snake species common to that area..its the only way to really work it out even then check with a local zoo or vet maybe they have information that could help

In the US, it is called a "Redbelly Snake," although some Hognose Snakes can also have a red belly.
