I think about 12 is okay, but how long are you talking? The duration is what really determines the answer to the question.

When my step-daughter was 10 her mother would leave her for an entire evening, past midnight. She was afraid. I wasn't sure what the age limit was so I called Children's Services to ask. They told me that in Oh. it is technically 18 BUT it really depends on the child and how they feel about being left alone. If a child older than 10 called the police to say they were scared, the parent would be given a warning. No excuses under 10. I left my son alone starting about 11 or 12 for just a few minutes at first. But we have a security system. I probably would have been more cautious if we didn't have the system.

I think kids should start stay in home alone when their parents are ready & truly feel that they're responsible enough though that is almost impossible to tell for sure. I started around the end of 6th, all 7th grade, I'm 15 now. Sometimes I think in order to tell if they're ready for it is to give them the privilage & wait and see if they get carried away and mess up, that's how I learned:) jk Just make sure all the knives & matches are locked up before they're left alone if they're really little:)

i imagine it relies upon on the baby, the position you stay, how lengthy you're away for and how a options away you'd be. My eldest son is pretty a lot 12 and has stayed contained in the domicile on my own for an hour or 2 even as i have finished the procuring (he hates procuring...standard bloke!). He has also been allowed to pass into city for some hours with his acquaintances (city is about a 10 minute bus vacation from our domicile). He has continually been very to blame and has even toddler sat his little brother for 5 or 10 minutes even as I printed a letter, or picked up his brother from college. My middle son is 8. and that i'll allow you to comprehend presently that i'll't be leaving him on my own at elderly 11/12 as he's very spacey! (as an party, ask him to pass you the paper and also you get the television distant...He switches off plenty lol!!!). So it actually relies upon on the baby.

call me old fashioned but i think 14-15.... by then they are old enough to handle people coming to the door.. answering the phone without letting people know they are alone.... by that age they can handle emergency situations..
there is too many things that can go wrong for them to make adult decisions... many children freak out when fire comes and ultimatly die because they hide in the closets ect ect...
even at an older age there are still worries *guns, alcohol, sex, accidents still happen..
plus it also depends on how long your going to be gone.. 30 mins? 5 hours 8 hours? over night? once agian it depends on the maturity of the child..
Good luck....hope this helps

I stayed home at 7, but only while my mom and sister ran to the store. Overnight, even a 13-year old would be better off with a babysitter or friend of the family staying with them
