I have a 4-cyl. engine and a 5 speed manual trans. I have 32" wild country tires and the engine is not big enough for them. I need something that will give me more power but I would like to keep my transmission to save on cost.

Change the gears in the axles. Keep the good gas mileage and have a better all around rig. If you swap in a 4.0 you will have to change the lockers in the axles anyhow. If I were you I would just get some steep gears like 4.88's or 5.13's for it and a couple Detroit true track lockers for it. Then you can get a small lift for it and move up to 33's and still have power. With the price of gas now I would not suggest moving to a v8 unless you have money rolling out your a$$. Hope I have been helpful.

A turbo will do what you wih without breaking the tranny. Swapping in the 4.0 will require a change in transmissions to deal with the extra torque. A Gear swap to 4.88 will get most of your power back without spending a lot of money.

some bigger engines will fit but you could damage trans or axels i would re-gear diffs or buy another jeep with bigger factory engine you need to check what your trans and axels will handle you can also get preformance parts for the 4 cyl a lower ratio transfer case would get you better preformance off road youstill need to check on what your jeep will handle
