Believe it or not, the restoration of old wood burning and coal burning stoves is big business. So is the restoration of appliances used prior to the early 1960's. There is so much information available that it can be overwhelming. Best advice is to do a Yahoo search for "vintage wood stoves", "antique wood stoves" or "wood stove restoration" (include the quotation marks)and you will have plenty of sites that will give you practical information you can use in your own restoration.

Good luck with your search.

rust is normal in a cast iron stove - clean it with any thing that works - sand blasting works best - but so do paint strippers scrapers steel wool sand paper - point is to get it clean - don't worry about getting it down to metal because the best thing to do after you have it cleaned up is to paint it with high heat black bar-b-q paint - you don't need to paint inside unless your not going to use it - also don't worry about heating up the item when painting as the spray can will suggest , just give it a few coats
