A good way to get rid of an ingrown hair is tweezers, there should be a little but of hair sticking out of the infected area that you can pull out. It'll hurt a lot but the swelling will go down in a matter of days. Its caused the same way pimples are, oils build ups in the skin, if your getting them commonly in an area then make sure to clean it more in the shower.

Ingrown hairs are occur when the hair which has most likely been previously removed buy some method (shaving, waxing, tweezing, etc) does not pass completly thru the skin and is trapped..
this can lead to infections (can sometimes look like a zit) and discomfort...
the best way to prevent them is to exfoliate the area after hair removal so that no dead skin would get in the way of the hair growing back
products such as TendSkin work in that way so mildly exfoliate the skin to get rid of any irritation

Usually places that do waxing (salons etc) will sell products like 'Ingrown Go'. It generally happens after waxing, I think its caused by the end of the hair being too fine (unlike in shaving where its blunt and coarse) to push its way out, it gets trapped beneath the surface. Exfoiliating helps.

The same product that helps prevent bumps after shaving will prevent ingrown hair--a lotion that contains alpha hydroxy, such as Eucerin Plus. The alpha hydroxy sloughs off the outer, dead layers of skin that can cause new hair regrowth to get trapped and infected.
