there was a time when there was little or no baseball played other than in this country, and there was no doubt that the baseball we played, especially the major leagues was the best in the "world".........thus the term world champs, ie. world series, was not a far fetched assumption. tradition has maintained that those terms are still in use now.

Stop asking this old question. It used to be called the world series because only US and Canada played it. Even though other teams play it now, they didn't want to change the name. Oh, and if you think all the other countries in the world don't get to compete, have you ever heard of a little tournament called the World Baseball Classic?

Despite its name, the World Series is not a "world championship" in the same sense as the FIFA World Cup or the Cricket World Cup because it is not between national teams, but is limited to Major League Baseball teams, which represent individual cities and states (currently of the United States and Canada only). A better comparison would be with the UEFA Champions League, which is also between city teams and limited to one region of the world. Its name is a carryover from the 1880s, when baseball existed at a highly-skilled level only in the USA.

I used to wonder this myself. Here's the answer as I understand it, although I'd be interested to see if anyone else could contribute more information.
I imagine it's mostly ambitious marketing. MLB wants to represent itself as *the* world organization. It might sound overly ambitious in 2003, since there are so many other leagues around the world in addition to the American League and National League. But it wasn't such a stretch 100 years ago. At the time, the two MLB leagues were the two big leagues. And having a few Canadian teams makes them international. ;-)
By the way, they do the same thing with football (American football, of course, not soccer) and basketball. The NFL and NBA champions are called "world champions."
For what it's worth, all three sports were invented in America. So at one time, the champions of the American leagues were the world champions. They have a legitimate claim to the history, if not the modern reality. :-)
