Yoda states that "good relations he has with the wookies" in the movie. In the novel it goes a little further and explans that Yoda had intervened a long time ago in a situation with the wookies that helped them immensly. Wookies and Yoda's species are known for long ages (Chewie is approximately 230 years old in A New Hope and of course in ROTJ Yoda is 900) and therefore have long memories of friendship.

Wookies can understand Basic (the common language in the Star Wars Universe that sounds suspicously like English) but they don't have the vocal cords that allow them to speak it.

Language

The Wookiee language is Shyriiwook. While they are capable of understanding Galactic Basic....which of course Yoda speaks fluently.... normally none are able to speak it, due to the structure of their vocal chords. Wookiees with speech impediments can speak Basic to an extent.

Similarly, while it is possible for other races to learn to understand Shyriiwook, most races are incapable of speaking it.

Han, Lando and Yoda understand Shryiiwook.

dialogue from episode IV...after take off from Mos Eisley spaceport...

Chewbacca: Rarrgh rerrrr rarrgh ra.

Han Solo: Boy you said it Chewie.

(To Luke) Where did you dig up that old fossil?

Actually, the translated dialogue for that scene is "That old man's mad" for Chewie.

See Empire of Dreams on the Trilogy Bonus DVD where they play that scene from a test reel. That's what Mayhew says before it's replaced in voiceover in post production.

If last link does not work...try doing a search for "Subtitles for Wookies" for even more stuff on wookiees.

Basic is the English of our universe. People in other countries are forced to learn english so why should it be any different in the Star wars universe?

Return of the Jedi is the third, and last, Star Wars movie. There have been no others since 1983.

Most species in the Galaxy understand Basic (this is what Yoda was speaking), they just choose not to speak it.
