The expression comes from the first stanza of Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1837 "Concord Hymn", which commemorated the beginning of the American Revolution (in April 19, 1775 at Lexington & Concord Massaschusetts)::

"By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled;
Here once the embattled farmers stood;
And fired the shot heard round the world."
