Myth:
The shape and height of your belly can indicate your baby's sex.
Truth:
The popular belief that women carrying boys carry low and that women carrying girls carry high just isn't true. The shape and height of your belly is determined by your muscle tone, uterine tone, and the position the baby is in. That's why someone may think you're having a boy because you're carrying low, when actually the baby just dropped lower into the pelvis because you're closer to delivery. So, what's the most accurate way to determine your baby's sex? Talk to your doctor about getting an ultrasound.
Myth:
Fetal heart rate can indicate your baby's sex.
Truth:
A normal fetal heart rate is between 110 and 160 beats per minute (bpm), although some people think if it's faster (usually above the 140 bpm range) it's a girl and if it's slower it's a boy. But there have been no studies that conclusively show that heart rate is a predictor for a baby's gender. Your baby's heart rate will probably differ from prenatal visit to prenatal visit anyway - depending on the age of the fetus and activity level at the time of the visit.
Myth:
The shape and fullness of your face during pregnancy can indicate your baby's sex.
Truth:
Every woman gains weight differently during pregnancy, and every woman experiences different skin changes. If people tell you that because your face is round and rosy you're having a girl, they might be right - but it's just as likely that they're wrong!
If its a boy your nose is wider if its a girl your hips and waist are wider.

Without a clear picture or a DNA test from an amnio, you can't know. And no, they won't do a sonogram to determine the sex because it costs a lot of money, trained people's time, and ties up the ultrasound equipment when there are people who need it to save their lives or their babies' lives.
For thousands of years, people have had to wait until their child was born to know the sex, and all over the world, most people still do. Sometimes they can't even tell AFTER they're born. A little gratitude that you don't need a sonogram might take the edge off your anxiety.
I will tell you one thing I've observed over the years. If it's your first, you will probably have it 14 days after it "drops."
***EDIT***
I wonder if those of you recommending lying about problems to find out the sex of your healthy baby have considered how you will feel when the baby in the next ER stall dies because the tech was doing your unnecessary ultrasound. Or what it will be like during your next pregnancy when you NEED an ultrasound, but the insurance companies will no longer pay for them because of abuse.

The ONLY way to tell with certainty is a DNA test by amniocentesis. But this is not a good thing to do just for this reason. The only other way to tell with some certainty is the ultrasound or sonogram, but even then there are often mistakes made.
All other methods, like carrying high or low, intensity of morning sickness, how big your bum gets and all the others are OLD WIVES TALES. You will probably realise this yourself after a few kids.
So sit back and be glad that your baby is healthy. It's just like Christmas, much better if it's a big surprise!

You can find a place around where you live that you can get a sonogram for around $75.00. My daughter got one and it was well worth the money. She also got a 3d that we paid for and it was so amazing to see her little BOY moving all over the place. You do risk if they are not in the right position that the tech can't see but that doesn't happen that often.
Good luck!

Don't listen to the old wives tales....Every old wives tale indicated that I should have been having a girl and I had a boy.. its just a coincidence that it actually comes out true for some women. I would get a second opinion on getting an ultrasound, or see if you can book in for a 3D ultrasound...they are supposed to be really accurate...good luck!

The only way to be 100% certain is to have an amniocentesis. I don't think any doctor in his right mind would order one just so you can find out the sex of your baby. I guess you'll just have to be surprised! Be happy that your baby is healthy and active. :)

I had the same issue. I didn't find out until she was born.
I was asked ALL the time what I was having-- I just said, " The only ones who know are God and the baby and neither one is telling."
