Let's read again the first answer given by John, but this time put a word "BETTER" in place for ****, this website will actually explain that Haiti is no way comparible to SA:

South Africa is wonderful. So long as you've got enough money to spend you will access everything you want, from tours to the National Parks for a taste of wildlife, to spoiling yourself with the world class restaurants, shopping from a variety of designer shops, visiting luxurious shoping malls and shoping centres, beautiful weather, beautiful people, you are absolutely not going to feel lost.

I am a South African and travel a fair amount. When abroad and someone recognizes my accent they usually approach me and tell me that South Africa is one of their favorite places to Visit in the world. I have lost count of how often this has happened. Yes we have some problems but as long as you are semi smart you will be just fine. It really is a beautiful country with friendly people.

It depends on your experience before going to South Africa. I just spent five months in Cape Town and it was quite hectic for me because I had not traveled much before that. Everyday life is similiar to that of any city, if you are in the city. The tourist areas are pretty standard, but the poorer areas are what makes it different. Most of the population lives in "townships" which are informal houses made from scraps. They do not always have sewage, running water, or electricity. However, the community lifestyle of these areas is envious. Young women, especially those who are white, need to be cautious when out after dark. But overall the country is full of spirit and I was inspired by their pride in their country despite its past troubles.

It is not like the rest of Africa. We have very good infrastructure, a lovely country and a very unique culture. People in South Africa are very friendly and because of our diverse heritage (African, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Malay, Lebanese, British etc.) we have the best food in the world. Why take the word of a patriotic proudly South African - come for a holiday in our beautiful country and enjoy the hospitality of our Rainbow Nation.

As said above, it's definitely not like the rest of Africa, the infrastructure is much better. Lifestyle is good, people are friendly. I guess crime is the main problem, causing many of us to find a crime free lifestyle elsewhere.
