The tax where I live in Calif. is 7.25%
399.99 X 0.0725 = 28.999275
You can always call the nearest store near you, and ask the clerk what the tax is on all taxable items.

Tax can even vary from city to city so you may have to check a receipt from something else you have bought recently. Where I live tax is 8.6%.
If I wanted to figure out the tax I would multiply $399.99 x .086 and get $34.39914, so round it up to $34.40.
If you want to know how much you are going to pay all together, $399.99 x 1.086 = $434.39
If you are ever stuck without a calculator use 10%, or $10 for every $100, $1 for every $10.

It depends on the tax in your state. For example, where I live tax is 7% which means I would multiply 399.99 times 0.07 and the result is 27.9993 which means the tax would be $27.99.
