Volkswagen used to have a transmission called an "Automatic Stickshift". It had a form of clutch that automatically disengaged when you let off the gas, so you could shift with a standard gearshift lever. It was supposedly easier to drive than a pedal-operated clutch, but it was more complicated than a regular clutch and it never really caught on. There are also a number of motorcycles (mostly small trail bikes like Honda Trail 90s) with the same kind of clutch that allows shifting by just letting off the gas and using a foot-operated lever like a normal bike, but with no clutch lever. I'm sure there have been other car and bike makers that tried it, I just remember the V.W. and the Honda.

You can get a Freightliner M2 with a Mercedes-Benz Automated transmission. It seems like an automatic to the driver but it does have a clutch that is controlled by the trucks computer to shift itself. This gives the best of both worlds. All of the fuel mileage of a manual shift but the convenience of an automatic.
