Here's a history of them

According to Edgar Cayce animals like unicorns and centaurs, mermaids, etc, were fallen spirits that were slowly taking on human form. At first the spirits were confused and even dwelt in inanimate objects. Back then mind and matter were much more closely related hence making it easier to modulate ones body. In time things evolved via vehicles of surgeries and personal will so much so to that man eventually took on his most efficient material body to spiritually grow. Now do I believe all this? I do not disbelieve. I believe in keeping an open mind of anything being possible. The only things I discount as not being possible are world views that cause needless suffering. Believing in unicorns does not hurt anyone unless you believe you need to sacrifice virgins and babies with the horn of the great unicorn god. I think it's a safe bet we'll be ok for quite some time.

A thing that doesn't exist can't be disproved. There's no evidence that unicorns or flying horses ever existed, but there is some evidence that rhinoceroses or antelopes may have been the source of the unicorn legend.

Look at this antelope photo, for example:

I believe that at some point in time they did exist, some of the stories you hear growing up are just too bizarre to be made up. I also believe that fairies and such once existed but that there is no place for them in our world now, and that they have either been killed of long ago or have retreated to some mystical protected place that we as mortals cannot get to. I mean if you can't believe in purity what can you believe in. Also, it is said that only children can see fairies because they are pure and innocent, maybe the same goes for unicorns.

Perhaps not the unicorn of mythology, but a creature called the unicorn is mentioned in the Bible...Psalm 92:10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.

Supposedly there is a museum somewhere that claims to have a piece of a unicorn's horn, reputed to have magickal properties.
