"Cat Litter Box Warning For Pregnant Women
Researchers: Pregnant Women Need Screening
(AP) CHICAGO A group of doctors is calling for routine testing of pregnant women for an illness that can be caught by cleaning a cat litter box.
Doctors often tell pregnant women to avoid cleaning litter boxes because of a parasite which can cause blindness and brain damage in their children.
Researchers, writing in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, say even if doctors ask women about possible exposure, they miss the diagnosis about half the time.
It’s not clear how many babies are born each year with toxoplasmosis. Currently, the states of Massachusetts and New Hampshire conduct routine screenings.
The disease is also linked to gardening and eating raw eggs or meat."
