Depends on your experience, will, taste!
I would start from North, then Central and then in a couple of countries in the South, ending the travel in Greece, enjoy some time on the Greek islands of the Aegean!
I would suggest to travel by train, not plane, between the countries, so you can sea more, enjoy and pay less!

Plane tickets are expensive, around 800-900 a ticket. The cheapest tickets are usually going into London since it is the closest major airport in Europe to the United States. It's also an awesome place to start. Hang out in London for a while and then take the English Channel Tunnel (Chunnel) to Paris. Then get yourself a Eurrail pass which gives you train travel on any train to the majority of Europe for a certain amount of time (2 weeks, a month etc). You pay like 200 dollars or around there and you get to take any train you want at any time you want to any of the participating countries (there's like 26 around there). Search Eurrail in google or yahoo. That's the way to go. I assume you're a younger person so great cheap places to stay are Youth Hostels in pretty much every city in Europe. It's a great place to meet people as well. Good luck. www.eurrail.com is the website.

Why ask,just Go!Asking takes all the fun out of it,be bold,be brave,be yourself(unless you're a wuzz).
If you were gonna do "the real Backpack thing" you wouldn't need any ticket to get from country to country. It's not like America, they're nice over there.,

Look into Croatia. The summer is great there. Specifically, you should do the Adriatic Coast, also known as Dalmatia. It's just recently been discovered, so prices are still semi-reasonable. You will have a great mix of sun, amazing water, hiking, biking, site-seeing, relaxing and GREAT FOOD!!!!
