The ludwig accent is a decent cheap set. Will set you back about $350. It has all wood shells with a laminate coat, nice colors and decent sound. For another $150 you can get the add on Toms and have a 7 piece. I would also suggest going with a set of Sabian B8 cymbals. Also an inexpensive set.

Tama makes a good set (that's what I currently own), and Ludwig has came way down in price.
Believe it or not but the most expensive part is the cymbals if you're not careful. If you bought Zildian crash, ride and hi-hats, the combined price could cost as much as your set. Paiste makes some great cymbals for a good price.
Honestly, if this is your first set, you may want to look in your local newspaper classified ads. Used sets go for half the price.
Or if you want new, try this site:

You are better off going to a music store and renting a set to see if A. You really like the drums and B. have any talent for it. It will save you a ton of money that you can spend on drum lessons. You really need professional lessons to learn to play any instrument well and you need serious practice every single day. It's a big committment. Get a rental set and see if you are willing to commit.

my beginner's set was a legion--the cymbals and snare were crap, but its a good brand to learn on besides, u usually need to buy a snare seperate from the set if u want a good one. try picking up a used set, those are usually inxpensive
