My suggestion would be to get a self hypnosis tape that works for you. Frankly, once you learn how to go into a trance, returning to that state is very easy. You go into several times a day. The only difference here is that you are putting a little more framework to it.
Roy Hunter has some good self hypnosis scripts. There are several on the web.
One of the keys to trigger a relaxation response is deep breathing. Try inhaling on a slow 5 count and exhaling to a count of 10. Trying this while sitting or lying still in a quiet place. Just let the deep breathing calm your mind. Notice it will give you a good start. I wouldn't worry about being in some specific state, just let your mind go. Just focus on your breathing and notice how relaxed you become. It is a start. Many scripts will take it from there.

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net
If you want to get an edge in everyday communication and lead other people towards your goals this is a must read.

Sit in a comfortable chair. Turn all the lights out. Be wearing comfortable, loose clothing, or no clothing. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth slowly. Breath from the diaphram. Now imagine you are breathing in a blue vapor and slowly exhaling that same blue vapor over and over again. You do not have to tell yourself to relax. You just will. Now as you are inhaling and exhaling the blue vapor, and your mind and body are relaxing begin to tell yourself to send money to Tom care of Yahoo.com. LOL.

I've used this one for years, give it a try:
First, picture all the colors of the rainbow from red to purple, I usually start with a red sunset, a yellow lemon, an orange, a green lawn, etc..
when you get to purple, make it big. sometimes I get swallowed up by purple smoke, sometimes I pick up a purple pebble that becomes a purple planet.
THen, visualize yourself walking down stairs. I usually walk down 10-13 stairs and I'm as deep as I ever want to go.l

This one I do will clearly seeing the imagery around me it goes like this...
I am in a room. It is a safe warm room and there is a rug under my feet, the room is furnished with shelves that line the wall... each shelf has a book that is related to my life... As I approach one shelf it swings out gently opening up and reveling behind it a stone cavity, I step out into the cavity to discovr it is a stone stairwell. I feel the cool stone refreshing me and the strnegth of the stone all around me.. I take the first step caustiously, applying my weight little by little until I am standing on the step. It is a strong step. This staircase spirals down and around. There is a hand rail which I grasp to give me stability, I step down the next step with more sureness and notice that there are images carved into the stone walls, I reach out and run my finers over these images, they tell a story and I notice that story, I step down the next step..and notice that although the staircase is made of stone I am still warm. I feel safe. I take another step down the staircase and feel stronger and safer I allow mymind to wander about this staircase and what I might find at the bottom as I step down the next step I bring my mind back to this step, I notice that with every step I am leaving parts of myself behind me, my work, my worries, my family, my friends, I feel okay abut that because I know that if I want to I can pick them up on the way back up. I feel free as I begin to notice myself leaving more things behind me as I descend the stone staircase...
and so it goes on until I am finally at the bottom of the staircase and notice I am on the sandy banks of a river..... and then I talk myself through a journey in a boat....
make it up to suit yourself... arrange things so it works for you..

They say that hipnosis unlocks the only side of the brain we dont know about the subcontious, whilst in dreams it seems like a state of hipnosis without controll of what you see. i beleive hipnosis can help us get to know all our sides even the ones we dont know about yet, and just mauybe thats where the rest of the 80% of brain compasity has been locked or stored ,all we use is like 20% of our brain ,,,where did the rest go?

are you sure you really want a hypnotic state? to be honest, the fact that you're looking for a 'quick fix' solution on a web forum suggests that you're a little impatient, which for me means you're maybe not suitable for hypnosis .....
just an observation.
